A Community in Mourning

Tony Borcia, 10, was struck by a boat on Petite Lake in Lake Villa.

The Libertyville community was confronted with some sad news this weekend as residents learned that 10-year-old Tony Borcia was killed in a boating accident.

Tony was tubing on Petite Lake in Lake Villa. He reportedly fell off of the inner tube and was struck by a boat.

It's always sad to see a young life cut short. Officials from Libertyville Elementary District 70 had wonderful things to say about Tony, who was a student at Butterfield School. Superintendent Guy Schumacher called him a "bright, happy boy who loved going to school, spoke proudly of his siblings, and showed a genuine love for his family and friends."

Candice Kehoe, principal of Butterfield School, said "Tony was well-liked by the students and loved by the staff. Entering fifth grade, Tony was to be a leader. Butterfield's family has experienced a great loss."

The greatest loss is undoubtedly being felt by Tony's family and friends.

Please join me in expressing sincere condolences to Tony's family and friends, and wishing them strength in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

I saw a picture of this beautiful child, Tony, on another site. I don't know your family, but my heart is breaking at your loss. ( I am a mother of 4 and grandmother of 10.) You are in my prayers.......may God hold you in his loving arms and give you strength.

A reader left this comment on our original story about Tony: "I do not understand the 'greater plan' for our world. My deep condolences are with your entire family. My prayers are with you all. May Angel Tony some day help you find Peace. Billy"

I cried when I read this story and when I saw Tony's picture. Such a beautiful child with a smile that certainly lit up the world. We left the chain for Lake Michigan where accidents are less likely to happen. The chain was always crowded and most of the drivers drinking and their judgement impaired. The chain needs to be monitored and boaters stopped and tested.
