Does the State Have Your Money?

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford to Host Cash Dash Tour in Libertyville on Nov. 16.

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford and Mayor Terry Weppler will be hosting a Cash Dash event to help residents determine if they have unclaimed property on from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Nov. 16 at the Village Hall.

“People are thrilled to find out they have money just waiting for them through Cash Dash,” Rutherford said. “I encourage area residents to come visit me at local Cash Dash events for assistance is locating their money or property – plus everyone should make an attempt to review our online database annually so they don’t miss out on money or valuable assets the state is holding for them.”

Libertyville's Cash Dash event is one of the 10 stops Rutherford will be making in Lake, Kane and McHenry counties.

The treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division has $1.5 billion in cash, plus contents from Illinois bank safety deposit boxes that have been abandoned for at least five years.

The Cash Dash program helps reunite owners with their unclaimed property. On average, the Cash Dash program returns about $80 million dollars annually to owners. It’s common for people to lose track of their assets when they move or when loved ones pass away. Businesses and banks are required to turn over unclaimed accounts to the treasurer’s office.

Some examples of unclaimed property currently held by the treasurer’s office include the following:

  • Money in inactive savings and checking accounts
  • Unpaid wages or commissions
  • Stocks, bonds and mutual funds
  • Money orders and bill overpayments
  • Paid-up life insurance policies
  • Safety deposit box contents.

To find out if you have unclaimed property through Cash Dash, visit the treasurer’s website at www.treasurer.il.gov and follow the Cash Dash link.

You can also contact the Unclaimed Property Division by calling 217-785-6998 or emailing info@cashdash.net

Valuables like jewelry and sentimental family keepsakes "securely" stashed in a safety deposit box for five years? OMG!!!!; the state takes it as theirs!!!!! "Dormanr" bank account in joint tenancy with your late parent, a Florida resident, who used the account during the summer months while visiting up north; now escheated to the state of Illinois? Well, given our governors conviction to accommodating illegal aliens with the Illinois Dream Act, in-state tuition for illegals, and non-cooperation with the "Safe Communities Act" aimed at removing dangerous illegal alien criminals from our midst, someone has to pay the cost of Illinois being a beacon and magnet for illegal aliens. Of course the state returns only a tiny fraction of what they steal, and then makes a big publicity event out of returning to rightful owners what they took by thievery in the first place. Did I mention the Illinois "income" tax? Actually, a revenue tax, indeed a revenue tax on tax for all the property and local taxes paid, once again, to finance the state's facilitation of illegal immigration and cheap labor for business, as well as future ethnic votes for the Democratic party (and cheap labor for Republicans' business benefactors). This is another reason/example of why we're screwed as a nation.
