Horse meat Found in IKEA Meatballs, American Customers Concerned
The meatballs containing horse meat were not sold in the Schaumburg or Bolingbrook locations, the Associated Press reports.
Some IKEA Restaurant customers got more than they bargained for in the company's trademark Swedish Meatballs, Reuters reports.
The world’s leading furniture retailer, which also has restaurants in each store, has stopped selling its Swedish meatballs in 13 European countries after tests found horse meat in the food labeled as beef and pork, the Associated Press reports. The horse meat-laden meatballs were on sale in the Czech Republic, Britain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Hungary, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Ireland.
Retuers reports there is no indication that horse meat is present in any other batches of meatballs, including those sold in the Schaumburg and Bolingbrook locations, although some American IKEA shoppers are skeptical.
“I am quite concerned about the horse meat that has been found in your meatballs in Czech Republic. Where are the meatballs that are sold in the U.S. made? What assurances can you make that they do NOT contain horse meat? I am considering throwing away the bag I have in the freezer and never buying/ eating them again,” Claudia Redman McCabe wrote on the IKEA USA Facebook page.
Will you continue to eat the meatballs served at local IKEA restaurants? Tell us in the comments section.

I get that people are upset because they love horses, but are there health risks with this as well? Seeing as we eat all sorts of other animals, I wouldn't think horse meat is all that different.

"The trouble with horse meat hidden in beef is partly a health concern. Meats taken from store shelves in Britain and Germany had traces of a powerful equine painkiller, phenylbutazone, or “bute,” which is banned in animals destined for human food, tests showed." The horse meat got into the beef because they were slaughter at the same facility.

Ok, I can see that as being a problem. I see the quotes you put, but where did you pull that from? I'd like to read a little more.

Also discussing how the US is trying to lift the ban on slaughtering horses in the US, to bring horsemeat back to the market. I know this may be some people's cup of tea but not mine! Yuck!

As I understand it, horse is one of the few alternative meat sources available that doesn't taste like chicken.

IKEA is low rent anyway, not sure why anyone would shop there and then expect the food to be good.
