Candidates for Congress, General Assembly Gather at BJBE

Democratic and Republican candidates for Congress, State Senate and State House introduce constituents to their background and platforms.

Candidates for Congress and the Illinois General Assembly met at Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim in Deerfield Monday for the North Shore Jewish Community Candidate forum.

There were 21 people running for 11 offices including two Congressional races, three Illinois State Senate contests and two campaigns for the United States House of Representative.

Highlights from the forum for the 10th Congressional District, 29th State Senate District and 58th State House of Representatives District are presented here:

Tenth Congressional District

  • Brad Schneider (D) - “Budgets are about priorities -- a reflection of who we are as a country, what we value, and what we see as our future…and while we need to reform our budget, we need to do it in a way that puts our values first.”

“As more and more people continue to struggle to find work, as companies with high-level openings can’t find skilled workers, we need to change the way we do business in Washington to address our challenges and take advantage of the opportunities to get our economy moving again.”

IL Senate 29th District

  • Julie Morrison (D) - "I also serve as the Township's case worker.  I get to work with people who are feeling the hardships of our bad economy and pair them with vital services like the food pantry, foreclosure counseling, and how to keep seniors in their homes.  My experiences have given me a unique perspective on what our state is facing.  I'm the candidate in this race that represents the values of the 29th District.  I am pro-choice, against concealed carry, and I want to protect funding for education and human services."

"I want to increase the number of tax payers in our state, not the amount of taxes we pay.  Our state needs to implement tax credits to reward businesses that create jobs."

  • Arie Friedman (R) - "I want to read to you what the Chicago Tribune wrote about my candidacy.’Republican Arie Friedman, a Highland Park pediatrician and former Navy pilot, is one of the strongest candidates we see on the ballot this year. He's brimming with ideas on how to promote jobs — starting with repeal of the state income tax hike. Friedman is endorsed.'"

My father Eugene ran as a Democrat for this same State Senate Seat in 1990. If you want to know my credentials for working across the aisle in Springfield - try growing up as a Republican in Eugene Friedman's house."

IL House 58th District

  • Scott Drury (D) - "I want to usher in a new era of government," Drury said, based on "credibility and responsibility."

"[Illinois] can do better, we have to work together," he added, promising to reach across the aisle, if elected.

Drury also promised to fight state funds reaching companies that do business with nations hostile to Israel.

Mark Shaw's main goal is to depose Speaker Michael Madigan from his position of power which he has held for over 30 years. The problems Illinois faces in due part to Madigan requires changes in our government. It is time to do something different in state of Illinois and District #58.

Shaw's main goal should be to bring ideas to Springfield, not depose anyone. But when you have no ideas, I guess you have to set that as your goal. Vote for people not parties. Unfortunately, Shaw is nothing more than a party hack with no new ideas.

If you vote for any democrat, you are voting for Madigan and the almost 30 years of corruption. No democrat has stood up to him, so you cannot say otherwise.

The ideas are there but I bet you refuse to listen. They involve tax relief for people and businesses. Of course spending must be cut. This isn't an idea but a tested formula for fixing a financial problem. Atleast before the Fed was just printing funny money.

If you vote for Democrat Drury, you can bet he won't oppose Dem Speaker Madigan, he wants a long career in politics, unlike Shaw who wants to get in there and help change things for the better for Illinois and its people, then return to his family and his business. The last thing district 58 needs is more of the same thing it's had for way to many years.

Shaw wants to help change things? LOL! Thats a good one. If he wanted to run he would have instead of managing Turelli's campaign and covering up her lying about her college degree. He was a last minute replacement and not even the choice of most republicans.

If you get rid of Madigan, things will change. I guess Democrats like the corruption and the toilet that he has flushed us down these past 3 decades...

OK, who will be the GOP party leader and how do you know he won't be just as corrupt as Madigan? That's why you don't vote for parties you vote for people. And Shaw is one of the worst political hacks I've seen in years. Drury gets my vote.

@Walter - well, for one thing, if a REPUBLICAN was in charge you can be sure the media would be doing their jobs.

So, in other words you have no clue and he could be as corrupt as Madigan.

"corrupt as Madigan" = not possible

Insanity = Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Vote Dan Biss out. "Crain's has the scoop - "CHICAGO - Illinois has dug itself into such a huge financial hole that it may not be able to provide basic services to residents or meet employee benefit obligations", according to a national task force that is due to release a report about the state's finances. The report, prepared by the nonpartisan State Budget Crisis Task Force , will also say that the state's fiscal stress is a "serious drag" on its economic performance, a statement from the task force said. The group is led by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker and former New York Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch. "Illinois's budget is not fiscally sustainable," Ravitch said in the statement. "Despite recent progress and difficult choices, it is still in a deep hole." If this is not the most compelling argument to vote Dan Biss and prevent other local
Madigan appointees like Laura Fine from taking office, I don't know what is.

Walter- I couldn't agree with you more and that is imperative that we elect just six people in Illinois who will then be in the position to change just ONE person- the current Speaker- who has controlled a political oligarchy which has led to the financial ruin of our great state. It starts with one person; and, as far as I am concerned here in the 9th Senate District, it starts with making sure Dan "We are all Liars" Biss is not re-elected. His grand scheme is to run for Schakowsky's seat when she retires, anyway; so why have him be involved in the Illinois Senate?

Well Walter, if Republicans were in control you can bet the media would begin to have "investigative" reporters again instead of cheering sections.

Hey, Walter, I respect your comments, but I have some basic questions for you- it is easy to be an armchair critic or extremely easy to be a blogger, but are you making a difference by walking precincts, distributing literature, fundraising with candidates, making telephone calls, volunteering hundreds of hours of time or even being an Election Judge? You are very quick to point out everyone's problem with their and analysis and comments and I was just curious if you walk your talk. :) Just asking.

What does that have to do with anything? Everyone 18 and over has a vote and has every right to question candidates on their background, policies, and ideas. Elected officials work for us. We don't need to walk precincts to make our voting decisions. You can if you like, but it's not required to be an informed voter.

$More Tax=Dan Biss. Vote No to Biss' fuzzy math Pension scheme to dump future pension liability on our strapped school districts and his plans for much higher Progressive Illinois income taxes! Enough of raiding our property taxes for Springfield's benefit!!
