Letter to the Editor: Libertyville High School Should Support Local Businesses

My name is Larry Bonk, I am the owner of Bonkers on Main in downtown Libertyville. I'm writing to you about a concern I have about the Libertyville High School not supporting Libertyville businesses.

I have tried over the past two years contacting the high school about being a vendor at their concession stands. I was told that they were opening it to different businesses and we would need to fill out an application.

I left numerous voice messages with the school and never received a call back or never had the opportunity to talk to them about the services I had to offer them.

What I did find out was they are using McCarthey's in their football concessions and have used Jersey Mike's in their basketball concessions last year. Both of these businesses are located in Vernon Hills.

I've written an email to Dr. Marina Scott, Principal of Libertyville High School, asking for a reason why a Libertyville school is supporting a Vernon Hills business when Libertyville offers so many different types of businesses that would love the opportunity to be in their concession stands.

I've never received a response to date from Libertyville High School. By supporting Libertyville businesses up to $68 in sales tax out of every $100 spent stays in Libertyville and provides many things for the community such as police and fire protection, parks and road maitenance as a few examples.

Also by supporting your local bussinesses and keeping the Libertyville busineeses going it will impact your tax base. Libertyville offers so many wonderful retailers and service providers. They provide jobs to the local high school students as well as to the community.

As a parent of former Libertyville High school students, I would hope the local high school would support it's local businesses and not send their business to other communities.

Thank you,

Larry Bonk

lib. hs is part of dist. 128. the dist is bigger than the lib hs area, geographically. the two businesses mentioned from vernon hills are in dist. 128. perhaps it is not the local hs that chooses the vendors. perhaps it is the district. try there.

Since when is it the mission of a high school sporting event to support business/commerce? I think the bigger picture is that both Schools in DISTRICT 128 receive support from the entire Greater Libertyville-Mundelein-Vernon Hills chamber of commerce on a regular basis. Maybe we should go back to Saturday afternoon football games with parent organization grilling hotdogs and hamburgers (like many neighboring schools), if it will eliminate this type of negative energy to a great school.
