Common Core Standards, researching on the Internet, word skills, and using interactive whiteboards are just some of the topics parents can learn about in the first Parent University offered by Libertyville Elementary District 70 on April 4.
District 70 teachers will share examples of teaching and learning at the Parent University being held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Butterfield School, 1441 W. Lake St., Libertyville. Parents can choose which sessions to attend as they learn about what is happening in today’s classrooms.
Designed and presented by District 70 teachers, the event mirrors the “carousel concept” District 70 uses to support professional development of our teachers.
Keynote Presentation on Common Core Standards
The event will begin with a keynote presentation about Common Core Standards, newly adopted in Illinois for English/language arts and mathematics. The presentation will be made by District 70 Director of Curriculum and Instruction Kathy Dinger.
Common Core Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that young people need for success in college and careers. With students fully prepared for the future, they will able to compete successfully in the global economy.
Following the presentation, parents will move to choice sessions. The sessions include learning how to help students conduct research, how family math games can support and boost academic achievement, how teachers utilize interactive technology with white board, how to use the Internet for research and what Internet tools the teachers use, as well as how to enhance word and reading skills.
“This is an exciting way to share what happens in our classrooms in District 70,” Dinger said. “We have supportive and interested parents who are always eager to learn more and this allows our teachers to showcase innovative strategies they’re using in the classroom.”
Registration for the Parent University is listed on the district website at d70schools.org and the school websites.
