Stop Using the "R" Word Say LHS Students

Libertyville High School students are on a campaign to end the use of the "R" word.

Students at Libertyville High School viewed an important video in class Wednesday created by the school's Best Buddies program and Cat-TV to spread the word that the "R" word (retarded) is not cool to use because it is a derogatory put down to those with legitimate mental disabilities.

The video has also been posted on YouTube.

LHS also has a banner outside the school this week for students to sign, pledging that they won't use the slur anymore. Students are also signing pledges to hang  on their lockers.

The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment, according to the school's website.
