Winter Storm Watch Issued for Tuesday

The watch applies to much of northern Illinois.

Tuesday is shaping up to be a messy day in northern Illinois.

A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening in Boone, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee and McHenry Counties. The National Weather Service in Chicago says the entire area could see more than 6 inches of snow.

The snowfall could be heavy at times, according to the National Weather Service.

"Heavy snow and strong east-northeast winds gusting to 40 miles per hour, especially on the lakefront, will reduce visibility and make travel hazardous," National Weather Service officials said their winter weather message Sunday night.

The storm has been named Winter Storm Rocky by The Weather Channel, which started naming storms this year.

Is it my imagination, or have we been getting all of our winter storms since Korrina started doing her weather and astronomy blog reports?

Korrina, i think you have been working too hard and should take a nice long vacation.

I think we asked Korrina to do her Skycast because she controls the weather and too many people were complaining about the mild winter at the start of the season.

Well, being able to control the weather is a nice thing to have going for yourself... she is a lucky girl. I'm sure she gets invited to a lot of outdoor events.

On a somewhat (but not much) more serious note, why does the Weather Channel pick out names like 'Nemo' and 'Rocky' for these storms? As much of a joke i think the concept is, i'm guessing that Disney wasn't too thrilled when storm 'Nemo' caused fatalities.. and now 'Rocky'? What do we think of when we hear the name 'Rocky'? My first thought is Rocky Balboa. Why name storms that potentially cause deaths with names of popular movies/characters, etc.?

If i'm the naming authority, i'm naming these storms things like "Hitler", "Pol Pot", "Bartman", etc. you catch my 'drift'.

Dan Arenov, I rarely agree with you on anything - except your comment on the way storms are named.

Well lets hope Skokie does not cancel garbage service again. Seriously there was 3 inches and they cancelled service on Friday and now my garbage is overflowing on my curb.

Believe me, if I were in control of the weather, it would be sunny and 70 degrees outside right now! Haha!
