While the article is an interesting essay, it ignores the real problem in U.S. education andRead Morenothing mentioned in the article will change the problems we have. As a parent, of 2 kids who have just graduated from Big 10 schools, it is obvious what it is. Namely, the educational system has at every turn attempted to remove parents’ influence in the education of their own children. While parents in the U.S. are trying to be more engaged in their children’s schooling than ever before such visits never go to the actual teaching and education. The reality is that parents aren’t empowered to make a difference. Parents never get a straight story about improvement in learning. “Teaching to the test” to allow schools to pass the No Child left behind tells little about the student. What about a benchmark to actually gage year over year performance the way parents had when we were kids. Laws claiming to protect the right of privacy for students have completely severed interaction between students, parents and college. Parents may have the “right” to get information but it is reluctantly given and teachers show little interest in having any dialogue with anyone, much less parents. Without parents being able to have effective and active input, the system has no chance.
