Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
The day my youngest sister, Tena, graduated from nursing school at the College of Lake County, I couldn't imagine being more proud of her. She worked so hard, sticking with the program no matter how tough it was at times. And then, there she was on the stage with her fellow nursing students, citing the Florence Nightingale Pledge, promising to "devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care."And that is exactly what she has done since graduation. While she can't share specifics about her work with patients, I know she has saved lives. And I know that her patients love her. I am so…
"The impossible is possible tonight."That's exactly what I was thinking Thursday as I sat mere feet from my idol, Billy Corgan, at his new tea house in Highland Park. My colleague and friend, Angela Sykora, and I decided we'd take our computers and work from Madame Zuzu's in the off chance that Billy would be there. It's one of my dreams, of course, to sit down with him, have a cup of coffee (or tea), and chat. So we got our tea, set up our computers and went to work. That's one of the many things I love about working for Patch—that we can work from anywhere.I just happened to glance up and …
None of us will ever forget where we were on Sept. 11, 2001.I was still asleep when my brother Karl called me to tell me that a plane had just crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I jumped out of bed and turned on the TV, tuning in to the Today show on NBC. Matt Lauer and Katie Couric looked just as stunned and confused as I was. We were obviously thinking the same thing: What a horrible accident! Unaware of what was still to come, I kept thinking, "How are they ever going to repair that building?"Matt and Katie talked about the incident while showing live footage of …
The Libertyville community was confronted with some sad news this weekend as residents learned that 10-year-old Tony Borcia was killed in a boating accident.Tony was tubing on Petite Lake in Lake Villa. He reportedly fell off of the inner tube and was struck by a boat. It's always sad to see a young life cut short. Officials from Libertyville Elementary District 70 had wonderful things to say about Tony, who was a student at Butterfield School. Superintendent Guy Schumacher called him a "bright, happy boy who loved going to school, spoke proudly of his siblings, and showed a genuine love for …
I have to admit something to you, dear readers. I've never really been to Libertyville Days. OK, I went once with my brother several years ago and we just went on a couple of rides, and I walked in the parade a couple of times. But other than that, I've never really experienced Libertyville Days. So I want you to tell me — which events/activities should I check out this weekend? Here are a few I'm curious about: The Pet Pageant, which is slated from 3 to 6 p.m. June 17. According to the Libertyville Civic Center Foundation, first-place prizes will be awarded for Pet Owner Look-Alike, Most …

Hello, everyone!I'm Korrina Grom, the new editor of Libertyville Patch! I am so excited to become part of this fantastic community. I'm a life-long Lake County resident and I've been a journalist for nearly 14 years. I've officially been with Patch for a year now. I spent the past year as the editor of Lake Zurich Patch. I decided to take on this new position partly because I live super close to Libertyville. But I have also always liked Libertyville — especially the vibrant downtown. Plus, I used to cover Libertyville Elementary District 70 years ago when I worked as a reporter at Pioneer …
