All the smart money would have been on Carmel High School at halftime. The Carmel boys basketball team dominated the first two quarters going into halftime with a 13-point advantage. After a 3-point foul in the last three seconds of the fourth quarter, Libertyville High School's Griffin Pils tied the game at 71-71, forcing overtime play. With five fouls in the final minute of the game, Libertyville won the game 83-76. Pils finished the night with 39 points and the determination to bring the victory home.
Libertyville's Cook Park Library recently held its first Quilt-A-Memory program for children.Children's Librarian Colleen Blase says she was inspired by a quilting kit she saw her daughter enjoy with her grandmother."I thought it would be a fun event and it goes with our family-based Cozy Up and Read theme," Blase said.For more photos visit our Facebook page, and be sure to "like" us.
In 2005 cheerleading became an official high school sport in the state of Illinois. Cheerleaders no longer had to cheer from the sidelines supporting other sports in pursuit of a trophy. Governed by the IHSA, the North Suburban Conference District held this year's tournament at Lake Zurich High School on Jan. 8. Varsity and JV squads from the Lake and Prairies conference vied for the honor of being the division's best squad. Rain could not dampen the holiday spirit in downtown Libertyville as MainStreet Libertyville held its annual Dickens of a Holiday. Santa had to abandon his sleigh in the park due to rain, but Mike Main of Arden's Furniture opened his store to Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Petranek's Pharmacy hosted the Children's Holiday Shoppe and an authentic Victorian High Tea was served at the St. Lawrence Church. The Ansel B. Cook Home served as a warm and cozy retreat from the rain, showcasing Victorian holiday decorations. Santa is hoping for snow next weekend, when the event resumes on Saturday, Dec. 10.
At the recent Libertyville tree lighting ceremony, MainStreet Libertyville, a nonprofit that promotes revitalizing downtown Libertyville, announced the winners of the downtown holiday window display contest. The winner in the retail business category was Singalila Gallery and for service business, Wisma. Dancing Through the Decades was the theme for this year's homecoming celebration at Libertyville High School. The traditional homecoming parade kicked off at the train station Saturday morning and continued to the Butler Lake campus. The Student Council organized the parade with a float depicting a decade and representing a class. Football players, cheerleaders, student organizations, community groups were also featured on a beautiful fall morning as the community turned out to watch.
Its Fire Safety Week. Have you changed the batteries in your smoke detector recently? At the annual Libertyville Fire Department Open House, firefighters and paramedics showed off the latest equipment available to serve the community and help save lives. The open house featured a fire pole for children to slide down, a dive pool to watch divers in action, an auto extrication demonstration, the Kids Kombat Challenge and many demonstrations and activities for families to enjoy.
Children are fascinated by large trucks so it was no surprise to see the huge smiles on their faces as they climbed a fire trucks, snow plows, mini-excavator, garbage and bucket truck at the Touch the Trucks event in downtown Libertyville on Oct. 1 sponsored by the Cook Memorial Public Library District. The next home game for the Wildcats will be Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. for the homecoming game against Warren.
The United Methodist Church of Libertyville is celebrating its 175th anniversary on Sept. 25 with a special visit by “John Wesley,” the Anglican priest from England who began the Methodist movement in the 18th century. Two blended worship services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. will feature a dramatic portrayal of the life of Wesley, who at age 70, looks back at his experiences. The program is a mix of wit and wisdom, inspiration and challenge, as gleaned from the journals and writings of Wesley and interpreted by retired high school communications teacher Fred Moore.
