The view from my desk, by Jillian O'Malley

Ring Ring Ring…. “Hello, I’m in pain, stressed out, and I could really use a massage today” Many phone calls begin this way for me here at Libertyville Massage Therapy Clinic. I can hear the pain in your voice. I can hear the suffering behind your words. Stomp stomp stomp.. I hear you make your way in the front door and up the stairs. I can see you’re struggling. I can see the weight of the world on your shoulders. I can see the stresses of daily life poking into your back and neck.  I greet you with a smile and assure you that we can bring you some much needed relief. Your massage therapist takes you down the hall and into the relaxation zone, commonly referred to as a massage therapy room. After an hour passes a completely new person re-enters the office.  The tired, pain-stricken, stressed out person that entered the massage room is now just a distant memory.  I see a new person. I am seeing the giggler. The client that is so relaxed and relieved, that they are simply laughing with life. Laughing about how wonderful they suddenly feel. Giggling about how happy they are with the way they can throw their head back in laughter and not feel that sharp shooting pain they had been feeling all week in the base of the their neck. I am seeing the sleepy head. They client who has been placed into a trance-like state of relaxation and only sees their bed or couch as the next place they would like to be. The tired, pain-free client who is certain they will sleep like a baby tonight, without all those aggravating aches and pains keeping them awake and restless. I am seeing the dancer. The client who is so pleasantly surprised with how well they are able to move around and wants to really soak it in. A little jive to remind themselves how amazing it feels to move freely and fluidly without those knots and kinks keeping them stiff. I am seeing the weeping willow. The client who is so thankful and relieved that the massage therapist took away their pain that it actually brought them to tears. This is healthy. These are happy tears of joy and relief and of new chances. I am seeing the believer. The client who now believes they may be able to get back into golf, swimming, running, all the things they once loved in the days when they felt better. The one who believes their future now looks a bit brighter than it did before their massage. I am seeing the achiever. The client who mentions that after their massage, they now feel like they can conquer the world, or at least dinner for the family tonight, and that is good enough. Then of course, I am seeing the heart. The client who is just bursting with love. Love for themselves, love for the world, love for being relaxed… love for massage. Love is the common ground within all of these characters, massage therapists, staff members, and friends. Our massage therapists love to help you feel better, you (our wonderful, loyal clients) love feeling better, healthier, happier. As office manager here at Libertyville Massage Therapy Clinic, I can confidentially say I witness miracles every day.   Jillian O’Malley
