Advocate Condell’s Slominski receives Justice Award

Jennifer Slominski, RN, Advocate Condell Medical Center’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Coordinator, was honored with the Justice Award by Lake County State’s Attorney Michael J. Waller at a recent ceremony. The Justice Award is presented annually to an individual whose work with victims of crime has helped improve and further services in the Lake County area.

“I had no idea I was receiving this award,” said Slominski. “I am greatly honored and humbled by the recognition, but need to recognize the continued support of the SANEs, my fellow staff, physicians, and the community. We attempt to restore control and empower the victims to hopefully begin their healing process.”

Slominski became Advocate Condell’s SANE Coordinator in August 2011, and in a brief period has developed many improvements for sexual assault services.

“One of Jennifer’s most significant accomplishments is the increased amount of training regarding responses to sexual assault available to police officers and other law enforcement officials. This training, provided for roughly 350 law enforcement community members, has helped improve awareness and appreciation of SANE procedures, as well as all the services available to sexual assault victims,” according to comments from State’s Attorney Waller at the ceremony.

Also, because of her commitment to improving communication between SANE nurses and Lake County hospitals and crime labs, Slominski was cited as a major influence in providing evidence for several cases prosecuting sexual assault offenders in the area.

“We are so proud of the work that Jennifer has done with the SANE program,” said Jody Jesse, Director of Advocate Condell’s Emergency/Trauma/EMS services. “Her commitment to the victims of sexual assault is truly inspiring.”

Slominski is also committed to improving services provided specifically for teens and young adults, and is a member of the Teen Dating Violence committee and works to improve services that address issues ranging from sexual assault to self-harming behaviors.

The Justice Award was presented at an event in Gurnee as part of National Crime Victim’s Rights Week. Victim advocates, criminal and juvenile justice officials, law enforcement, allied professionals and community volunteers gathered to remember victims of crime and their families, honor professionals who provide services to victims, and reaffirm their commitment to seek justice for crime victims of Lake County.
