Improv Playhouse proudly celebrates National Humor Month 2014, aka April, with a laugh out loud and hands on Stand-Up Comedy workshop on SAT APR 12th from 9A-Noon.

JUST ADDED! There will be not one but TWO nationally touring headliners teaching this workshop as one of Chicago’s best Bill Gorgo joins the lineup. Bill has taught at Columbia College in Chicago and currently teaches the beginner level classes at Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago. Bill is a long time veteran of both teaching and performing, and will add to this event.

Bill will join forces with Dobie Maxwell, who has been Zanies exclusive teacher since 1994. Do NOT be fooled by less experienced imitators - this is the ORIGINAL and still going strong class that has helped more than 2000 satisfied students from all walks of life realize their dream of not only experiencing the fun and thrill of live standup comedy performance, but experience it in the correct way. There’s a HUGE difference, and you will quickly see why.

What are people saying who have experienced the difference?

“My first time on a comedy stage I opened for Dobie at a bowling alley in Waukesha, WI. We stayed in contact. His generous guidance and insights were invaluable and really helped lay a rock solid foundation for my career.”

Frank Caliendo – Headliner and Television Personality, Los Angeles, CA

“Dobie gave me the confidence I needed to start my stand up career and was even there years after to offer advice.  Thanks Dobie!”

Tom Clark - Headliner, Los Angeles, CA

“I took a one day comedy writing seminar taught by Dobie.  The writing exercises I learned there have been invaluable.  Dobie has a ton of standup comedy experience and is a consummate professional.”

Pat McGann – Headliner, television host and frequent Zanies House Emcee, Chicago, IL

I've always appreciated any word of wisdom Dobie has to offer.  I've never met anyone so kind and open to helping other comics get better and further their careers.”

Michael Palascak – Headliner, Los Angeles, CA

What are people saying about Bill Gorgo?

“I will not only use what Bill taught me in future standup but also in many other paralleling artistic endeavors.   I thank you very much for that.  I also just want to tell you how refreshing it is to go through a comedy program in this town and not feel like you've just been taken advantage of for a year.”

Darren C. – Chicago

“Bill has a laid back teaching style, but totally knows what he’s talking about. I am a musician by trade, and saw after the first lesson how many similarities there are both onstage and off between music and standup comedy. I had a great time in class, but learned a lot as well.”

Joe N. – Chicago

“I am a single mom and have always loved standup comedy. I wanted to treat myself to a class but was afraid of it being a ‘boys club’. Bill made it comfortable for me and also the four other women in our class. It was a life changing experience, and I’m SO glad I did it. Thanks Bill!”

Elizabeth S. – Barrington, IL

Comedy is a completely different business in a completely different world than it was in 1995. Dobie and Bill are markedly different in their comedy and teaching styles, but both agree that there are fundamental ingredients of what it takes to build a solid comedy foundation.

Their combined FIFTY PLUS YEARS of hard earned practical experience down to three basic but information packed levels designed to help the beginner focus on several aspects of what he or she will need to master the craft in the 21st Century.

Q: Who is this workshop designed to help?

A:  Literally ANYONE that has public contact, whether as a performer or professional. People from all walks of life have taken and enjoyed this workshop, and it’s a broad sample of what is involved in performing standup comedy including writing material, performance techniques and plenty of one on one attention. Questions are always welcome, but a structure will be followed.

Q: What if I’m an actor or improviser?

A: Great! Come on out. Those are crafts in and of themselves, as is standup comedy. You will get a basic outline of what standup involves, and it can be used to enhance what you are already doing no matter what that may be. Performance skills are required for all of these, and standup is its own entity. It’s by far the most difficult, and this will give you a whole new perspective.

Q: What if I have never been on stage in my life?

A: Great! Come on out. This workshop is friendly and laid back, but jam packed with practical tips and hands on personalized information you just can’t get anywhere else. It will be a very big head start should you decide you enjoy comedy and want to take it further. This is the place to be if you’ve never ventured out on stage before. It can be a jungle, but we’ll walk you through it all.

Q: What if I’m already doing standup? Isn’t this beneath me?

A: We welcome all levels of performers to this workshop, and we will be able to give useful and tailor made suggestions to help you cut through the field of mediocre to poor acts. We’ve walked the walk and been through the wars. This will be the greatest investment you make to this point.

Q: Is there any kind of guarantee?

A: Every workshop comes with a 100% money back guarantee if not completely satisfied. Dobie and Bill have proven their abilities time and time again, and Improv Playhouse has always been of the absolute highest integrity in all of their classes. Nobody is looking to rip anybody off. This is a tremendous opportunity for anyone that wants to learn the craft of standup comedy to sample one on one time with two of the best teachers anywhere. You will receive more than you pay for.

Here is what you will receive in the three hour (but usually goes longer) workshop:

- A brief but detailed and inclusive history of standup comedy in the modern era.

- Examples of some of the all time greats, and detailed analysis of what it takes to be successful.

- An objective and hands on critique if your abilities, and assessment of where you are today.

- Practical guidance on how to pursue your dream realistically in the next 1, 3 and 5 years.

- A basic but effective outline as to how to create limitless funny material.

- A hands on clinic on how to approach the stage correctly, and avoid common beginner errors.

- A chance to network with some very nice people that have similar interests than yours.

- Encouragement and education from not one but TWO professionals that have been there.

- Secrets on how to overcome stage fright, nervousness and how to beat hecklers every time!

Class tuition is $99.00 for the Three Hour morning workshop. Improv Playhouse is celebrating its 14th year of programming excellence in the performing arts for adults & youth.  For more information call 847-968-4529, email info@improvplayhouse.com & visit the website at www.improvplayhouse.com
