Libertyville Could See Northern Lights Thursday

A strong solar flare facing the Earth earlier this week may bring the Chicago area a rare display of the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, Thursday.

NBC Chicago reports the Aurora Borealis could be viewed as far south as Colorado and central Illinois with the best time to catch the lights likely to be Thursday evening, weather-permitting. Cloudy skies are in the forecast this afternoon in Libertyville, with mostly cloudy skies possible from 4 to 5 p.m., according to weather.com.

A solar flare shot out by the sun late Tuesday could make its way to Earth on Thursday, which "should shake up Earth's magnetic field and expand the Aurora Borealis south," according to an Associated Press article.

The Associated Press reports residents in Chicago, Boston and Cleveland should watch for "shimmering colors low on the horizon."
