Local Author to Host Father-Son Golf Clinic

Local author Sedrik Newbern is partnering with Studio 59 Golf at the Libertyville Golf Course to sponsor a Father-Son Golf Clinic on Friday, June 14, two days before Father’s Day. The event will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. at the golf course in Riverside Park, 870 Country Club Drive in Libertyville.

Newbern, who grew up without his biological father, authored a book entitled “Unconditional Forgiveness: Lessons on Letting Go to Build Better Relationships,” which was released on Father’s Day, 2012. The book is Newbern’s personal inspirational story about loss, love and the importance of forgiveness in healing damaged relationships.

Newbern said he wanted to host an event around the one-year anniversary of his book’s release to honor fathers who are making a positive difference in the lives of their children. The Father-Son Golf Clinic seemed like a perfect fit.

“The real reason for this event was a celebration of dads and I wanted it to coincide with the one-year anniversary of my book being published,” he said. “I wanted to do something fun to bring dads and their sons together for Father’s Day and hopefully bring attention to men who are making an impact on their families and their communities.”

“The Father and Son Golf Clinic is an exciting opportunity for dads and sons to learn about golf and have some fun. This is a great way to start Father’s Day weekend.”

The cost of the clinic is $35 for a father and son pairing. All fathers and their sons are welcome to participate. Trained golf professionals from Studio 59 will be teaching basic golf skills to the kids and there will also fun contests and games.

Newbern, who lives in Lindenhurst and works as an Allstate agent in Libertyville, will be signing copies of his book at the event. Over the past year, Newbern has hosted book signings in Chicago, Nashville, Tenn., Boston, New Orleans, Indiana and Kentucky. He plans to use any proceeds from the event to donate copies of his book to help kids that are growing up in fatherless households or otherwise difficult household situations.

Newbern said a great deal of attention is given each year to Mother’s Day and he thinks men who serve as positive role models for children also deserve special recognition.

“I’m on a mission to make Father’s Day a national holiday,” said Newbern. “I believe that we should truly celebrate men that are making a difference. Let’s shift the focus to good men and the impact they make on young people and the community.”
