Race for Hunger Event to Help Stock Local Food Pantries

On Monday, Feb. 25, State Sen. Melinda Bush and Lake County Board member Pat Carey will compete in the Lake County Farm Bureau's Race for Hunger at the Piggly Wiggly in Antioch.

The Lake County Farm Bureau will be sponsoring the 15th Annual Race For Hunger event at 10 a.m. on Monday Feb. 25 at the Piggly Wiggly store at 460 Orchard St. in Antioch.

The competitors in this year’s race will be State Senator Melinda Bush and Lake County Board member Pat Carey.

The Race for Hunger event is held every year to raise public awareness of Food Check Out Week, which celebrates the abundance and safety of food that we in the U.S. are able to enjoy due to the hard work of our farmers and ranchers!

Bush and Carey will participate in a five-minute race to see who can fill shopping carts with the highest monetary value of non-perishable food products. The contestant whose carts have the highest value will be named as this year’s winner.

The real winners of the event will be the local food pantries that will receive the groceries. The Lake County Farm Bureau purchases all of the groceries that are collected during the five minute scramble around the store.

In addition to the food that is collected at the event, the Lake County Farm Bureau will also be providing monetary donations in the amount of $500 to each of the pantries selected as recipients for this year’s race.

“The fact that the farmers in the United States provide such an abundant and safe food supply that each and every one of us enjoys is something that should be applauded,” says Greg Koeppen, LCFB Executive Director. “The Race for Hunger is not only a great way to raise awareness for Food Check Out week, but is also an exciting and fun event that gives back to the community,” adds Koeppen.
