Spotlight on Historic Buildings This Month

It's National Preservation Month, and residents are encouraged to celebrate their local gems.

MainStreet Libertyville is encouraging residents to celebrate local gems as part of National Preservation Month.

This year's national theme is "Discover America's Hidden Gems," and here in Libertyville, the focus will be on a number of historic buildings. The celebration is being coordinated by , the Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society and the Brainerd Community Center.

Libertyville Trustee Jim Moran said he and MainStreet Libertyville Executive Director Pam Hume came up with the idea to hold Preservation Month 2012.

Moran said the focus will be on general awareness. The plan is to share information each week about Libertyville's historic buildings, he said.

Here is the schedule of events for this month:

  • Week of May 7: Celebration and awareness of the Proctor Building
  • Saturday, May 12: , from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brainerd Building
  • Week of May 14: Celebration and awareness of the Brainerd Building and preservation efforts
  • Week of May 21: Celebration and awareness of the Central School Building
  • Monday, May 21: Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society meeting, slated for 7 p.m. at the Cook Park Library
  • Week of May 28: Celebration and awareness of the Libertyville Village Hall
