Libertyville Artist Exhibits Work at College of Lake County

Sands' art will be on exhibition from Jan. 13 through Feb. 19 as part of A Members Exhibition at the College of Lake County's Grayslake campus.

The abstract autumn hues in artist Donna Sands’ painting are  separated by a sliver of turquoise, representing the many divisions the Libertyville artist sees in the world.

“Creating divide was definitely something that I just wanted to put out there,” Sands said. “I do see the world as very lovely, but I do see the division between male and female, races, religions and the turmoil created by division.”

Sands’ piece, Divide; Reality is Born from Dichotomy, will be on exhibition from Jan. 13 through Feb. 19 as part of A Members Exhibition at the College of Lake County’s Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

A full-time artist since 2002, Sands started digging more into how she perceived the world after losing her husband to cancer in 2004. Inspirations for her art typically come from nature and her personal experiences. Divide is no different.

“As much as I get rejuvenated by being outside in nature, and absolutely love it because it becomes a spiritual moment for me, I want to do something now that’s just digging a little deeper into who I am and how I perceive the world as a whole,” Sands said.

Inspired by reflective shadows at fall in water, the 56-year-old artist wanted to share her interpretation of that scene and of how divisions should be in the world.

“This piece is reflecting two opposing sides working together — in the sense that they are separate but equal,” Sands said.
