School Starts Wednesday in Libertyville District 70

What's going on at each of the schools on the first day of the 2013-14 school year?

The doors to all five schools in Libertyville Elementary District 70 will welcome students back on Wednesday, Aug. 21, when the 2013-14 school year officially begins for a full day of school.

The school bell rings for elementary schools in Libertyville at 8:15 a.m., while the middle school bell rings at 8:50 a.m. School dismissal for the elementary schools will be at 2:45 p.m. School dismissal for Highland Middle School is 3:35 p.m.

Opening day at Adler Park School will feature school staff greeting the students at the buses by the bus turnaround. There also will be a brief ceremony outside in the back as new Principal Kerri Bongle introduces the staff and everyone says the pledge of allegiance. The school is located at 1740 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Butterfield School will host a Welcome Back assembly for students at 9 a.m. at the school, 1441 W. Lake St., Libertyville. Principal Candice Kehoe and Assistant Principal Andy Elbert will greet students and introduce staff in the gym. Music teacher Jonathon Weppler will sing the National Anthem.

At Copeland Manor School, students will be greeted as they get off the bus at the school, 801 S. Seventh Ave. The teachers and students will go to the cafeteria where a fifth-grader will lead the school in the pledge of allegiance and the Character Counts pledge. New Principal Lori Poelking will hold an assembly to introduce the school staff before children head to the playground at around 9 am to take a school photo on the new playground equipment.

On opening day at Highland Middle School, Principal Jon Hallmark, new Assistant Principal Lorenzo Cervantes and Dean of Students Meagan Dwyer will be greeting students as doors on the northwest and west sides of the school open for business. Seventh- and eighth-graders will gather on the basketball courts and enter in the back of the building at the northwest doors, while sixth-graders will use the west entrance and report to the lunchroom. The school is located at 310 W. Rockland Road.

Rockland students, families and teachers will gather around the flagpole at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 21 to welcome the new school year for the school at 160 W. Rockland Road. Principal Jeff Knapp will welcome students back and introduce the staff for the new school year. Then Rockland students will lead the pledge of allegiance and the school bell will be rung before students and staff enter the building.
