The wisdom of Pre-Ballet

Yesterday my wife and I attended our daughter's ballet class for "parent watch week".

Yesterday my wife and I attended our daughter’s ballet class for “parent watch week”. As we are sitting in there I am watching all the stuff they do and what they have learned, but to be honest I was spending 50% of my time watching the teacher because she is trying to teach 6 3 year olds dance, not an easy task. She literally never stopped talking or methodically moving the entire 30 minutes. The kids may have gone off track every minute or two but she just kept going and they eventually came back in line. As a coach and parent it certainly taught me a lot about how to be better at both.

But, why I am really writing is to compare 3 year old ballet students to us; people in the ”game of life”. 3 year olds are detracted easier then my dog seeing a chipmunk. They hear a creek in the floor and they turn. Someone sniffles and they turn. Someone got a different color scarf then them and they turn. Let’s just say they loose focus instantaneously. I am sure some of you are really focused individuals and can withstand a number of daily distractions, but for the most part we as adults are very distractible too. We just see them as more legitimate then someone scratching their butt next to us, which by the way would totally distract me. My point is that when we get distracted, like my daughter, it takes a little bit of time to catch up and get back on track. As adults our distractions are bigger and have bigger responsibilities so they could set us off track for longer.

The solution is to plan your day the best you can. The better prepared you are the better chance you will have to accomplish what you want to accomplish. If you have phone calls to make, block out time for that. If you have emails to return, block out time for that. If you are watching what you eat, plan your meals and get your food ready. I think you get the idea about time management. I still use the same organizer I did in 6th grade even with all the technology out there. I supplement with the technology but that organizer is gold for me.

Speaking of planning... Plan on attending this Saturday’s workshop and find out what my top 5 CORE exercises are.
