Dirty Girl Mud Run Returning to Lake County

Are you ready to get dirty?

The Dirty Girl Mud Run, with its mud pits and other obstacles, is returning to the Lake County Fairgrounds June 29-30.

About 10,000 people from the Chicago area are expected to participate.

“It’s so fun,” said event organizer Stephanie Gomory. “You really feel like a kid again. You’re playing in the mud.”

The Chicago-area Dirty Girl Mud Run was the first of the series. This year, there will be about 60 of these events across the country, all held to raise money for breast cancer charities.

“We expect to donate $300,000 to breast cancer charities this year,” said Gomory.

The women-only event is perfect for all athletic levels, Gomory said.

“You can pace yourself. You can run or walk,” she said.

The Dirty Girl Mud Run is also for women of all ages. Participants must be at least 14 to register for the event. The oldest participants, Gomory said, have been 80-year-olds.

The event features 10-12 obstacles, including the PMS (“Pretty Muddy Stuff”) mud pits, rope ladders, a climbing wall and a maze.

Gomory said husbands and children can often be seen cheering on the women.

“They’re watching their moms get dirty,” Gomory said of the children. “It’s kind of fun to reverse those roles.”

If you’re interested in participating in the Dirty Girl Mud Run, you must register in advance. Gomory said the registration fee will increase as the event day gets closer. To register, visit https://register.godirtygirl.com/mud-run/Chicago-IL-2013/32. Use the discount code GRAYSLAKEPATCH for a 20 percent discount, Gomory said.

The Lake County Fairgrounds are located at 1060 E. Peterson Road, Grayslake.
