Dear Pastor Andy, am I the only one who has trouble reading the Bible?

My Reply:

  1. Pray first, asking for understanding of what you're about to read in the Bible.
  2. Start in the New Testament with Matthew.
  3. Read only ONE chapter in the Bible a day.
  4. Try to do your study early or in mid-day so you can ponder the Scripture during the rest of the day.
  5. Take notes, highlight or underline anything that stands out to you (yes, it is OK to write in the Bible)
  6. Pray for understanding about what you read, and how to apply it to your life.
  7. Be ready to answer him when he asks me about what I read that day.

After I finished studying and reading through the New Testament, I figured that with all the references to the Old Testament, in the New Testament, I should probably read the Old Testament, also. So read the New Testament first, then the Old Testament with the same process. Knowing the New Testament already will help you understand not only the Old Testament, but the whole Bible altogether.
