Join flying, rolling & composting fun at Mundelein Parks

That's not Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner falling from the sky over Mundelein Park District (www.mundeleinparks.org) after Halloween—it's pumpkins!

Pumpkins are soaring, rolling and composting! Those fruits (or vegetables depending upon your take) are headed for high-flying fun and compost this November 4.

Bring your pumpkin (1/person) to the Annual Pumpkin Drop on Sunday, November 4,  12:30 to 1:30 p.m. This FREE award-winning, event is held at Keith Mione Community Park (1401 N. Midlothian Road). Watch them soar with Mundelein High School’s (www.d120.org) “Big Red” the catapult, roll down the sled hill and compost to help the environment.

Register by October 26 for a chance to have your pumpkin launched by “Big Red,” spanning nearly 10 feet across and designed with recycled materials by Mundelein High School students. The pumpkin with the greatest distance receives a special prize!  Young and old will enjoy this unique eco-friendly and award-winning event.  Age-group pumpkin rolling will also take place as well as a “fill-the- cans-with-pumpkins” race and a lesson on composting and recycling.  The pumpkins’ “remains” are composted at Prairie Crossing Organic Farm (www.prairiecrossing.com) in Grayslake, keeping the sustainable cycle going, an important component of the event.
