CONTRACT AGREEMENT

The Libertyville School District 70 Board of Education and the Libertyville Education Association have agreed to extend the contract for teachers through 2018, using a compromise that will see a base salary increase of less than 1 percent.

District 70’s Board of Education unanimously voted to approve the contract on Saturday, May 31, one day after teachers in the LEA voted to ratify the contract.

“We are proud we were able to reach an agreement to extend this contract in a timely manner while maintaining our financial commitment to our D70 community and taxpayers,” Board President Maryann Ovassapian said. “The Board is pleased with the result of the negotiations. We have always had a positive relationship with the LEA, ensuring that we always make the children our number one priority.”

Negotiating teams from both groups began meeting five months ago, trying to extend a five-year contract that ends in 2015.

“The Libertyville Education Association is pleased that our positive and collaborative relationship with the School Board resulted in this fair extension to our contract,” said LEA President Erin Carr, who is the Learning Center director at Adler Park School. “We appreciate that the community, as represented by our School Board, values the higher education and expertise our teachers bring to the students and families of District 70 every day.”

With some creative thinking and the desire to maintain a work force that values continuing education among its own ranks to keep teachers on the cutting edge, District 70’s new contract maintains a salary schedule with a commitment to recognizing teachers annual growth.

The new contract also provides more health insurance alternatives with HMOs and PPOs.

Under teacher contracts, teachers’ salaries are traditionally increased by bumps built into the salary schedule. Those bumps generally include adding another year of teaching experience, known as steps; compensation for additional education, including classroom credit and obtaining graduate degrees, know as lanes; and increases in a base salary, often referred to as cost-of-living increases. Teachers also can earn stipends for coaching sports, sponsoring clubs and other extra-curricular activities.
