Eat My Words : The Importance of Breakfast

31 million Americans skip breakfast as reported by the NY Daily News in 2011.  The two major reasons why were lack of time, or lack of appetite.  I find the latter quite hard to believe as I’m quite hungry in the morning!

Over the years we’ve all been told by one person or another the importance of eating breakfast.  Every article you read talks about boosting metabolism to improve weight loss.  Have you thought of all the other reasons why eating breakfast is important?

Thanks to our friends at Factor 75 for sharing these studies on why breakfast is more then a metabolism booster!

1.    Improves Endurance

In a time trial study of male cyclists, it was shown that those who ate a low glycemic index sustained longer endurance AND better times than those who didn’t.   You want to perform like an athlete all day? Eat breakfast.

2.    Makes You Stronger

In this study, two groups of women were followed; those who ate lean protein with breakfast and those who didn’t.  Bet you could have guessed it!  Those who ate lean protein kept more lean muscle!

3.    Boosts Cognitive Function

Attention parents.  Feed your kids breakfast! Numerous studies of high school and elementary school students found those who ate breakfast showed better short-term memory, better special reasoning and more.  They also showed that if they ate a low-sugar breakfast, they had higher cognitive function.

4.    Turns You “On”

Not in that way!  Breakfast wakes everything up.  While you are sleeping your body goes into a fasting stage, and waiting to eat prolongs that state.  This is fact will cause you to store more fat!  Not only does eating breakfast improve metabolism, but it also boosts digestion and energy!

Skip the danish, put down the dessert bars and make yourself a great protein filled breakfast.  Remember that a healthy breakfast doesn’t have to take 30 minutes to prepare.  Here is one of my favorite smoothie recipes that you can throw together in less then 5 minutes.

·      ½ Cup Almond Milk (substitute for your favorite, add additional for a thinner shake)

·      1-2 scoops chocolate protein powder

·      1 tsp Almond Butter (PB works just fine too!)

·      ¼ Cup Rolled Oats

Throw everything in the blender and BLEND!  Add ice to thicken.  This is a great, filling way to start your breakfast.  Not only that, but it’s super yummy!

Start out 2014 on a great foot and eat your breakfast!  You’ll thank me later.
