Kinesotape: Hype or Helpful

If you've watched the Olympics or even some soccer games you would have noticed black or brightly colored tape on these athletes.  If you wondered what it was, they had on Kinesotape.  This brightly colored tape is not just for fashion, but many including myself have seen its numerous health benefits.

Kinesotape is a rehabilitative taping technique that helps the bodies own healing process by adding support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the bodies range of motion.  Although the benefits haven't been seen as extensively in the research, in our clinic along with other colleagues offices, the results are there!

Benefits of Kinesotape:

  1. Reduce Pain & Inflammation : The lifting action of the tape relieves pressure on pain receptors allowing for quick relief.  This also allows for improved lymphatic and blood flow.  This not only decreases inflammation, but helps injuries heal faster!
  2. Reduce Swelling & Bruising: As stated above, it helps the lymph flow.  In conjunction it helps all fluids move out of the injured area, decreasing length of a bruise.  This is beneficial to not only sports injuries, but inflammatory conditions like lymphodema.
  3. Prevention or Relief from Spasms and Cramping: Enhanced circulation will help get oxygen and nutrients to your cells faster.  Both of these will help reduce a spasm and help prevent it!
  4. Structural Support for Weak or Injured Areas: Kinesotape provides support to these areas, but helps improve neurological muscle activation.  Tape can be applied to relax a muscle or stimulate it.
  5. Allows Athletes to Remain Active: This is key.  Injuries can be taped to not only provide support, but to reduce inflammation and pain.  This is great for minor injuries that will allow an athlete to continue to perform and decrease risk of future injuries.
We've taped everything from Plantar Fasciitis to low back pain.  Results will vary from patient to patient, but in my professional opinion; Kinesotape works!  I want to share a patient testimonial who had great results with only ONE application of Kinesotape.

"It was during one of my shoulder injuries, and later hip strain that I had the pleasure of meeting Jade Leasure. Jade was fresh out of chiropractic school and a new addition to the practice. I came in and could barely lift my shoulder. Dr. Jade took a look at it and offered to try a therapy that she brought to the practice from school. I asked what it was, and was told it was a type of tape. I said sure and Jade took out this blue roll of tape and cut of two pieces about 8 inches long. She then placed the tape on the shoulder in a specific manner. Jade was done. I said there was no way this could do anything but gave it a try. The next morning I woke up pain free. This scenario has been repeated twice since on my hip and shoulder again after straining them."  ~Frank S
