Another Highland Student Hit by Car

Student was talking and coherent when transported to hospital.

For the second time this month, a Highland Middle School student was hit by a vehicle on his way to school.

The incident occurred at 8:45 a.m., on Oak Street, just south of Rockland Road, after the student had exited his father's car, according to a communication sent out by Highland Middle School Principal Jonathan R. Hallmark.

Hallmark wrote: "The student had just exited his father's car and was hit by a southbound vehicle. Administration and staff quickly arrived on scene and emergency responders arrived soon after. While we do not know the extent of the student's injuries, he was talking and coherent when being transported to the hospital. His parents accompanied him to the hospital. Administration will be speaking with all students at lunch to impress the importance of following drop off procedures."

According to Hallmark, the school has had an additional crossing guard in front of the school and discussed safety with parents and children.

Superintendent Guy Schumacher called the Libertyville Police Department this morning to explore preventative measures, according to Robin Kollman, public relations facilitator for District 70.

"We have talked to students and will talk to the students again at lunch today and remind them of rules of the road," Kollman said. It takes an entire community (to ensure safety) -- students, parents other people passing by our school need to go 20 miles per hour," she said.
