Update: ComEd - Storm One of Worst in 10 Years

More than 10,000 Commonwealth Edison customers are still without power in Libertyville.

ComEd is calling the July 11 storms and subsequent power outages one of the worst on record. 

"It's one of the worst storms we've seen in the last 10 years," a spokesperson said.

As of 4 p.m., Commonwewalth Edison says more than 10,000 customers in Libertyville are still without electricity.

, leaving trees down and power out. At the height of the problem, 765,000 were left in the dark. The northern region was the hardest hit with 298,000 customers affected.

As of 2 p.m., ComEd has restored power to 20,000 customers in the northern region. 278,000 remain without power.

A total of 578,000 are still without power across the entire Chicago area. A company representative said it could take days before everyone has electricity again.

The intense lightning and high force winds that tore through Illinois have left 660,000 Commonwealth Edison customers in northern Illinois without power as of 10 a.m. July 11, according to a Commonwealth Edison representative.

“In the northern suburbs, which includes Libertyville, we have 298,000 customers out,” according to the ComEd representative.

ComEd says it's still in its damage assessment stages and that it could take “multiple days” to restore power in the area.

“We have 450 crews that are currently working in the field to get customer restored,” the ComEd representative said.

In addition, ComEd says they may request help from neighboring utilities from other states to restore power in northern Illinois.

“We are expecting to have quite a bit of assistance on hand to help us,” according to the ComEd spokesperson.
