Why go? Written by Lake Bluff author Susan L. Haugland and London composer Nicola Jane Buttigieg, this musical production examines the nature of genius and the guarded life Beethoven lived. Where/when: Ryerson Woods Welcome Center, 21950 N. Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods; 8 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.

Why go? Members of the Skokie Valley Astronomers' Club meet monthly. Adults and children older than 12 who are interested in astronomy are welcome to attend. No registration is necessary. Meetings begin with a presentation on astronomy followed by outdoor sky viewing if the weather allows. Member Christine Welsh will describe viewing the constellations during the fall season during this event.

Where/when: Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13.

Why go? Learn about the native Americans in Lake County, where they came from, how they lived and then take a walk through the Old School Forest Preserve to find plants they used medicinally and ceremonially. Participants should bring water, sunscreen and bug repellent. Adult supervision is required for this event. All ages are welcome.

Pricing: $2 per person for Lake County residents; $3 for nonresidents

Why go? Join the University of Illinois Extension for music, entertainment, face painting, hayrides, petting zoo, battle of the bands and barbecue food vendors. Fun for the whole family.
