Libertyville Police Warn Businesses of Potential Scam

Area businesses say the ad placements they purchased in a publication was never produced.

Libertyville police is warning businesses of a potential scam involving a Wisconsin man selling advertising space in a map publication.

According to the Mundelein Review, Mundelein police have received complaints from area business owners who gave money to Edward M. Zapencki of Fun Treasure Maps, a Wisconsin-based company, but have not seen their advertisements placed in the publication.

Earlier this year, the Wisconsin Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Zapencki for defrauding small businesses.

As of June 28, two Libertyville businesses have written checks to Zapencki and a few others have expressed their concern, according to Lt. Scott Fabbri of the Libertyville Police Department.

“Nobody has been defrauded of anything yet,” Fabbri said refering to businesses in Libertyville. "The maps were allegedly promised to be completed and delivered by August. Until then, we will monitor the situation but do not have sufficient evidence that anything criminal has occured."
