Native Plants, Compost Bins Available at Independence Grove

The Lake County Forest Preserves will hold a native plant sale May 11-12, while SWALCO will sell compost bins and rain barrels May 11.

As you gear up for spring, you may want to stop by Independence Grove this weekend to pick up some essentials.

The Lake County Forest Preserves will hold its 16th Annual Native Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12. The event, which will serve as a fundraiser for the Forest Preserves' environmental education programs, will feature a variety of items, including: ferns, flowers, grasses, shrubs, trees and vines. The full list can be seen on the Lake County Forest Preserves website.

According to Forest Preserves officials, "native plants thrive naturally in Lake County soil and water, requiring less time, effort and expense to maintain. They provide valuable food and shelter to native birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Because of the variety, ease of growing, and environmental benefits, native plants have become increasingly popular among professional landscapers and gardeners in recent years."

On May 11, the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) and the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission will sell compost bins and rain barrels in Independence Grove's North Bay Pavilion parking lot (Lot K).

According to the SWALCO website, compost bins with a 311-liter capacity will cost $50, while 55-gallon rain barrels will cost $60. These items will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
