Another Year Gone, Another Year Beginning

It's been a busy, interesting year for Brainerd, and the coming year will be crucial in the quest to save and restore the old girl. There's been a lot of speculation and misinformation out there, and it's important that everyone understand the real plan and impact of the proposed renovation of this historical gem. Mayor Weppler has set three town halls for residents to thoroughly discuss and explore the situation, to be held on Sunday, February 2, Wednesday, February 12, and Friday, March 4. Anyone with questions or concerns should attend at least one of these town halls to both voice their views and learn the details of the proposed project. An updated plan and drawings have been developed, showing how the renovated building would be utilized, including a large area designated for the senior citizens who now meet at the Civic Center. Other areas include a large group area which would be used for theatrical performances and large social occasions such as weddings and corporate meetings. Attached to this area is a catering kitchen to support the activities. Other areas include flexible spaces that can be configured for individuals or small businesses. These areas will be rented out at competitive rates, and are anticipated to support the building financially. A reconfigured parking lot will provide adequate spaces for visitors, as well as ADA-compliant access and a convenient drop-off site. A revitalized Brainerd would be a positive step for Libertyville, offering a real community center for all ages. Come to the town hall meetings and get involved in this important decision.
