The road to Accreditation

Sheriff Mark C. Curran Jr. is excited to announce that today the Lake County Sheriff’s Office signed the contract to receive Accreditation through CALEA.

Sheriff Curran has a vision for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to become the preeminent public safety agency in Lake County. “We will be known for our leadership, contemporary practices, and use of technology,” said Sheriff Curran.

What is CALEA? CALEA is the process of voluntarily complying with a set of professional standards dealing with policies and procedures. CALEA is based on established professional policing practices. There are several benefits of becoming and maintaining Accreditation through CALEA. Some of the benefits include: a sense of well-being and safety in the hearts and minds of the residents, jurisdiction becomes more attractive to economic and community development, County Board and other leaders are assured of the quality of public safety, international recognition, employee pride and increased awareness and morale, the ability to analyze delivery of services; measure its culpability; administer consistent discipline; and insulate against civil litigation, and assurances that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is trained and functioning in line with established policies and procedures.

The signing of the contract occurred today at 4:30 pm at the CALEA conference in Schaumburg, Illinois. Seated from left to right: CALEA Executive Director W. Craig Hartley, Jr. and Sheriff Mark C.
