  • Mundelein Knit & Crochet Studio’s mission is all about knitting and crocheting. Learning it, teaching it, sharing it, doing it! We are a free public group that welcomes knitters and crocheters of all ages and skill levels.  We are happy to teach newbies and we hope to use our love of the craft by doing good and participating in some charity projects such as creating caps for cancer patients or warm blankets for the needy.

We meet monthly at the Fremont Public Library in Mundelein upstairs in meeting room A from 6:30pm to 8pm. Our meetings at this location are generally around the 3rd Thursday of the month, but vary slightly.  Our full Fremont meeting schedule is on our Facebook page.

Our kickoff session was on Thursday January 16th where we met Sarah Ocepek, owner of Mia bella Yarn & Accessories in Highland Park www.miabellayarn.com .  Sarah is a Mundelein resident and avid knitter and crocheter, and she talked to us about her shop, the kinds of yarn and supplies she carries, events at her store, and yarn and fiber arts events in and around Chicagoland.

For our second session, we joined Carol Opsal and her group, Needlework a la Nuite, at Cook Library in Libertyville on February 3rd. They meet monthly on the first Monday of every month from 7pm to 8:30pm. Carol started Needlework a la Nuite for people to have a place to get together and knit and crochet and work on whatever needlework projects they enjoy. They will join us for our sessions in Mundelein too.

On our third session we joined Crocheters of the Lakes Monday February 10th from 6:30pm to 9pm at the State Bank of the Lakes in Grayslake. Mary Spain is part of the group and told us about it when she came to our second session. Crocheters of the Lakes is a chapter of the Crochet Guild of America and has a very nicely organized program. At the 2/10 session, their speaker introduced the group to the Button Room in Gurnee, and told us all about the hobby and art of button collecting. It’s $3 to sit in on a session with Crocheters of the Lakes as a visitor or $15 annual membership fee to join their group as a member. They are planning a train trip to the city on March 16th to celebrate National Crochet Month and crochet the day away at Ogilvie Station.

MKCS is always looking for those who love knitting and crocheting as much as we do to share their experiences with us. Knit and crochet teachers, experts, craft book authors, Etsy shop owners, Yarn shop owners, Ravelry group leaders, charity organizers – anyone and everyone who has anything to do with yarn and knit and crochet is welcome to address an MKCS session. Please let us know if you or someone you know would be interested.

Feel free to join our upcoming session Thursday February 20th. Our guests include Debbie Jackola, volunteer for Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, and Barbara Rowland of Lake County Association for Home & Community Education. Debbie is hoping we’ll knit some caps for cancer patients and Barbara is looking for someone to volunteer to teach knitting and crocheting to her group.
