John P. "Jack" Lichter was World War II Veteran, Local Business Owner

Services will be held Jan. 1-2 for John P. "Jack" Lichter.

John P. "Jack" Lichter, 87, a former resident of Libertyville, Petite Lake and Gurnee, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in Libertyville.

He was born July 6, 1926 in Chicago and was a 1944 graduate of St. George High School in Evanston. Following high school, Jack joined the US Navy, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a 1950 mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Illinois and also did some post graduate work at the University of Chicago. In 1965, Jack purchased the Boysen Well Drilling Company and later adding Sub Surface Construction in Libertyville. He was also the former owner of Ace Metal Craft in Franklin Park, retiring to Lake Suzy, FL in 1991.

Always active in the community, Jack was a past president of the Libertyville Noon Rotary Club, past president of the Illinois Waterwell Assn., and a member of the Lake County Planning Commission and Libertyville High School Board. He also wrote a book for young adults called "Waves of Challenges." He was a former member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville and a member of St. Antonio Parish in Port Charlotte, FL.

Surviving are five children, John (Kathy Claerr) Lichter of Brunswick, ME, Mary Lichter of Gurnee, Jean (Mark) Pitzo of Hawthorn Woods, Steven (Joan) Lichter of Libertyville and Basel, Switzerland and Sally Lichter of Gurnee; nine grandchildren, Evan, Angela, Jack, Matthew, Kathleen, Erin, Grace, Katie and Annie. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan in 2012; by his parents, John and Eileen Lichter, by a son Patrick, his sister Marie Knopka and brothers Bob and Louis.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176, one block west of Milwaukee Ave.), Libertyville. Prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at the funeral home continuing to St. Joseph Church, 121 E. Maple, Libertyville for funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery. Memorial contributions to either Catholic Charities or the Alzheimer's Association appreciated.
