Frances Opeka, of Green Oaks, age 102, passed away peacefully on March 19 at Libertyville Manor in Libertyville. She was born in Vrhnika, Slovenia on Nov. 12, 1910 and had resided in the North Chicago, Waukegan, and now Green Oaks area. In Slovenia, Frances received advanced degrees in mathematics and physics. She taught school for many years before fleeing Slovenia from communism. Frances retired from Abbott Laboratories 40 years ago, where she worked on the IV assembly lines. She was a member of the former Mother of God Church in Waukegan and currently a member of Queen of Peace and St. Joseph Church. Frances was also a member of St. Mary’s No. 79 K.S.K.J. lodge.
She is survived by four nieces, Anica and Marija Opeka of Slovenia, Mary (Dennis) Kapitan of Elkhorn, WI, Margaret (John) Rems of Green Oaks; two nephews, Carl (Joyce) Hren of Arlington Heights, and Gregory (Mary Ann) Hren of Hingham, MA; 13 great nieces and nephews; and 11 great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Hren of Waukegan and two brothers, Franc and Andrej Opeka of Slovenia.
Funeral Mass will be held at Queen of Peace Church, 910 14th St., North Chicago. 60064 on Saturday March 23 at 11 a.m.. Visitation will be held at the Church one hour prior to Mass. Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville. Rev. James E. Merold will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations made in her honor to the Queen of Peace Church would be greatly appreciated.
