Obituary: Joseph John Szewczyk

Services have been scheduled for Joseph John Szewczyk.

Joseph John Szewczyk, 94, passed away on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Rolling Hills Manor in Zion. He was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Chicago, and was a longtime resident of Waukegan. Joe was a US Navy veteran, having served during World War II and retired from the printing shop at Great Lakes. He was a bartender at Ted's Log Cabin in North Chicago for many years, was an avid horseman, a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Waukegan and the Knights of Columbus. Following retirement, Joe and Eleanor enjoyed traveling and took an ocean cruise on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are three children, Helen (James) Coulter and John (Jolene) Szewczyk, both of Gurnee and Catherine (Brad) Tidd of Hayward, WI; six grandchildren, Kevin, Brian, Lauren, Thomas (Monica), Gina and Tony; and two great-grandchildren, E.J. and Aaron. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor on Nov. 18, 2012; his sister, Helen Obenauf in 2012; and brother-in-law, Roger "Obe" Obenauf in 1987.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at St. Joseph Church, 121 E. Maple, Libertyville. Interment with military honors will follow at Ascension Cemetery. Visitation will only be at time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Shriners Children's Hospital, appreciated. Arrangements are by the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home Ltd., Libertyville.
