Obituary: Thomas J. Hickey

Services have been scheduled for Thomas J. Hickey of Libertyville.

Thomas J. Hickey, 75, of Libertyville, IL; formerly of Norwalk and Wilton; passed away December 5, 2012, peacefully in his home. He was born September 3, 1937 to Thomas F. and Christine (Murphy) Hickey of Norwalk.

Tom was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War; afterwards, he began his career at CL&P as a line helper, and retired as a line supervisor after 36 years of service. Tom found much enjoyment in his many home improvement projects; as the most scrupulous critic of his own work, he would analyze his handiwork at the end of each long day and wonder if there was anything he could do to improve it. His family will miss him when things break.

Tom was an avid golfer and enjoyed being a member of the “Norwalk 8” at Grassy Hill Golf Club. In winter, he played golf with the “Horse Thieves” in Venus, FL, which gave him much pleasure on a good day and much grief on a bad one.

Tom was past president of the John O’Donnell chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and was most proud of his Irish heritage.

Tom is survived by his wife, Michaela (DaMato) Hickey, of 52 years; his two daughters, Maureen E. Hickey of Traverse City MI, and Christine M. Abrego of Libertyville IL; also his son Thomas J. Hickey, Jr., of Libertyville IL; two cherished grandchildren, Sophia and Artie Abrego; his eldest sister Margaret Bernado of Nashville TN; his brother, Edwin W. Hickey of Norwalk; and many nieces and nephews who showered him with much affection and devotion during his illness. We will be forever grateful to all of them. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger sister, Christine Lombardo.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14, at St. John’s Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kellogg Cancer Center/ Thomas Hickey, 2650 N Ridge Ave, Room 4805, Evanston, IL 60201.
