Parents, please actually parent!

My husband and I moved to Libertyville recently with our two young children. I love the town but I have so disappointed at the lack of parenting I have witnessed in some playgrounds. Kids will be running and jumping over the equipment, knocking over the smaller children, and the parents are either on their smartphones and don't notice, or talking to each other and not paying attention. I've even witnessed kids get hurt and their parents could barely be bothered to look up and acknowledge them. I had words with a group of moms the other day who were all too busy talking to one another to notice their kids trampling the smaller kids and being rude when an adult pointed out that they should be more careful. When I asked the moms (who weren't even actually in the playground but down in the park) to parent their kids, they responded that they always watch their children, and huffily rolled their eyes. Yet, within 5 minutes, their kids were exhibiting the same behavior, running up slides that young kids were trying to slide down, and just generally not being careful. The moms again didn't say a word, and didn't seem to care. So much for watching their kids at all times. Also, if your kids are rude and pushing other children, I'm not sure your parenting skills are much to brag about. Now, I have seen some very involved parents, both moms and dads, but I have to say, I'm really disappointed that I've witnessed such absent parenting in such a great and obviously privileged town.
