Resistance: A Natural Process for Change

Resistance is an emotional process that happens when we are at the boundaries of our comfort zone; when the brink of new horizons appear.

Finally down to those last 10 pounds I want to lose and the scale has not budged for months.  I eat clean, hit all of my workout goals, journal everything going into my pie hole and drink 1.5 gallons of water a day.  So why is the scale not moving?  Why have I hit this plateau?

What exactly is going on is not that I’ve hit a physical plateau – it is a mental one called resistance. Resistance is an emotional process that happens when we are at the boundaries of our comfort zone; when the brink of new horizons appear.

Resistance to change occurs because our comfort zone is under attack; even when we are initiating the change.  Embarking into a new emotional place elicits fear of the unknown and/or the possibility of failure (as may have happened in the past).  Our current status equals comfort.  We KNOW what this is!

Resistance can be exhibited in many ways. Perhaps it is in subtle actions by changing up the workout routine, making excuses about lack of time, forgetting to journal, getting sloppy with portions, or procrastinating. It may be overt and loud; an outright negative attitude, refusal or non-compliance. Sometimes it is an outright self-sabotage of eating ice cream, drinking wine or skipping the regular workout entirely.

So how can you overcome this resistance and move toward your goal?  The first step is to identify the resistant and negative behavior.  Take the time to acknowledge the feelings that accompany this pattern. Identify as many as you can and examine their presence in your life; writing in a journal is an excellent tool for this practice.  Periods of truly quiet meditative time will help you work through all these toxic emotions once they are identified. Take ownership of your actions and remove the blaming and excuses!  Honest self-analysis and self-examination is a must.  Dig out, let go of, and replace these negative thoughts with positive constructive ones.  It is extremely empowering. To take these steps in your own healing results in rewards that far outweigh the discomfort of change.

What are you resistant to?
