Crews Working to Restore Power in Libertyville

The Fire Department received more than 40 calls during Tuesday night's storm. No injuries have been reported so far.

Torrential rain and high winds ravaged much of Libertyville on Tuesday night, leaving large sections of the village and township without power Wednesday morning.

“There is still a ton of people in town without power,” said Lt. Derl Sarby of the . “We’ve got a huge section in town along Milwaukee Avenue and a lot of our districts are out of power.”

Traffic signals along Milwaukee Avenue from Washington Street all the way into Libertyville were down. Route 137 by St. Mary’s Road, and Park Avenue also were without power this morning, according to Sarby.

“This morning Route 137 was a disaster because at Route 137 and Milwaukee Avenue the lights were out so everything going eastbound was backed up all the way past Butterfield Road,” Sarby said. “Then Butterfield Road was backed up quite a bit southbound because everyone was trying to avoid Peterson Road.”

Libertyville Fire Department received more than 40 calls Tuesday night due to the storm and power outage. Sarby says crews still are working to respond to downed lines.

“We had wires down all over town,” Sarby said. “All the branches that lay on top of (the power lines), they start sparking so (firefighters) pretty much were running around like crazy last night.”

The storm caused a lot of tree branches and power lines to go down, “but I don’t think there was any injuries from the storm, at least nothing was relayed to me this morning,” Sarby said.

With the storm over, things have clear up a bit in Libertyville, but Sarby recommends residents to stay away if they have problems with power lines.

“We don’t want people messing around with power, because that will cause injuries,” Sarby said. “ComEd is trying to get a handle on (the power outage) but I’m sure they are going to be backed up for two days, because this was from here to Naperville that got nailed with the storm.”
