Man Dies of Injuries in Car-Motorcycle Accident

Mount Prospect man was ejected from motorcycle; died several hours later.

A 79-year-old Mount Prospect man died of his injuries after his motorcycle was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta driven by an 18-year-old Mundelein man.

Chief Clint Herdegen said the accident occurred at 11:50 p.m. at Winchester Road and Route 45. Herdegen said the police investigation revealed that a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta was stopped in the northbound left-turn lane on Route 45, waiting to turn onto Winchester Road.

The car was stopped due to a train.

When the train had passed and the "No Left Turn" arrow was deactivated, the driver of the Volkswagen began his turn and then struck a 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was southbound on Route 45, Herdegen said.

The driver — who was the only occupant — was ejected from the motorcycle. The man, identified as William H. Thedorf Sr., was wearing a helmet, padded jacket, gloves and boots, Herdegen said.

Thedorf was transported to in Libertyville, where he died of the severe trauma several hours, Herdegen said.

The driver of the Volkswagen was not injured.

Southbound Route 45 at Winchester Road was closed for about 4½ hours due to the accident, Herdegen said.

"Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash and no citations have been issued as the accident is still under investigation," said Herdegen.
