Discovery Museum Planning Move to Libertyville

Lake County Discovery Museum officials are stepping up efforts to relocate the facility from Wauconda to Libertyville.

Plans to relocate the Lake County Discovery Museum from Wauconda to the Lake County Forest Preserve District headquarters in Libertyville are expected to be presented to forest preserve commissioners after their new executive director comes aboard later this month, reported the Libertyville Review.

The museum announced its intentions to move in 2011, citing the forest preserve building off Winchester Road, east of Route 45, would double their space, provide better storage for collections and be a centralized location offering greater visibility, reported Patch.

The museum opened at the Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda in the bicentennial year of 1976.

The museum is home to the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, which is the largest public collection of postcards in the world. The museum is also the keeper of the Lake County History Archives.

If the relocation plans are approved, a fundraising campaign would follow, reported the Review. The move is expected to happen in two to three years.
