Libertyville's Natural Gas Tax to Expire April 30
Trustees voted Tuesday night to let the 2 percent gross receipts tax expire, while approving a one-year extension of the electric and telecommunications taxes.
Libertyville residents will no longer pay a 2 percent gross receipts tax on natural gas.
Though trustees voted unanimously Tuesday night to extend the sunset clause for the simplified telecommunications and electric utility taxes for another year, the board agreed to let the natural gas tax expire on April 30, 2013.
"These were temporary taxes. I'm excited that least for now, we'll be able to make the gas portion of the tax go away," said Trustee James Moran. He added that it's "nice to be able to alleviate some of the tax burden on our residents."
The board initially approved the taxes in September 2009 to replace a reduction in sales tax and other revenues. The taxes were set to expire April 30, 2012, and the board voted in March 2012 to extend the taxes for another year.
At that time, however, the natural gas tax was reduced to 2 percent. That tax had previously been reduced to 4 percent in December 2011 from the original 5 percent that had been approved in 2009.
The electric and telecom taxes were extended to April 30, 2014.
