Libertyville to Paint Crosswalk on Brainerd Avenue

Village crews will be adding a crosswalk to make it safer for people crossing on Brainerd Avenue at Homewood Drive.

After a resident expressed safety concerns on Brainerd Avenue at Homewood Drive, Libertyville workers will be painting a crosswalk at the intersection after May 1.

“The high school students walk down Homewood and go to the Brainerd building parking lot and there’s a concern for the safety of the kids,” said Libertyville Public Works Director John Heinz.

The intersection of Brainerd Avenue and Homewood Drive is very close to Park Avenue. Brainerd Avenue is angled in a way that makes it hard for drivers turning from Park Avenue to see people crossing the street.

Trustee Donna Johnson, who chairs the Streets Committee, was concerned that drivers would not be accustomed to seeing a crosswalk there.

“After people have adjusted it’s no problem, but until they adjust, I can see a whole lot of people crossing thinking it’s safe … but possibly getting hurt,” Johnson said during the February Streets Committee meeting.

Heinz said village workers will post reflective signage near the intersection to educate motorists of the crosswalk and about the state law, which requires motorists to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.
