Most Tree Damage in Libertyville's Older Areas

Village officials say Monday's storm is significantly worse than the one on June 22.

Libertyville residents were greeted by the power of Mother Nature for the second time this summer as a fast-moving storm swept the area, downing trees and knocking out power to more than .

“For Libertyville, this storm is significantly worse than the one a couple weeks ago,” Public Works Director John Heinz wrote in an email. “We received assistance from Libertyville and Shields Townships following that storm, but I do not believe either of them were spared this time.”

Heinz says the worst tree damage was in the older areas of town, where the more established trees are; from Route 137 to Rockland Road, and from the Des Plaines River on the east to Butterfield Road on the west.

There also have been several accounts of homes and businesses that were damaged by the trees and/or limbs.

“There are significant amounts of trees that have been downed, as well as hundreds of branches down,” Heinz wrote.

By midmorning, Heinz said village crews had cleared debris to allow safe passage on all roads in Libertyville.

The village has several facilities, such as the water-pumping station and the sanitary-sewer pumping station, that are on standby generator power.

The village is now in cleanup mode. That effort is expected to take more than two weeks. Since many other communities also were hit, Heinz says there probably will be a limit on the level of assistance the village will receive this time.
