Mariano's Fresh Market Opens June 14

The grocery store is scheduled to open in Vernon Hills.

A new grocery store is set to open near Libertyville’s on at 6 a.m. on June 14.

Mariano’s Fresh Market, 1720 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills, will offer items from “grilled-to-order meat and fresh seafood to a 1,200-item wine wall,” according to DailyHerald.com.

Village officials have been concerned that the new grocery store in Vernon Hills may take a chunk of the tax base from Libertyville.

Since April, members of the Economic Development Commission have been discussing .

Mayor Terry Weppler says he plans to visit Sunset Foods, 1451 Peterson Road, and Jewel-Osco, 1300 S. Milwaukee Ave., "to thank residents for shopping in Libertyville; letting (them) know how important it is for their tax dollars to come back to our community."

The media blitz, however, may not help. .

Weppler says the allure of a new business may be strong, but he remains confident.  

“I think (Mariano’s) is going to pick up some business, especially being a new store,” Weppler said. “But I'm confident we have a strong tax base and we will maintain that."
