Former Highland Park Mayor Mike Belsky said he is considering a run for Lake County treasurer just over a week after incumbent Treasurer Robert Skidmore decided not to seek reelection.

Belsky sent Patch a text message expressing his intention to take a look at returning to elected office as the Democratic nominee for Lake County treasurer a day after former Lake County Board President David Stolman said he would seek the Republication nod.

Belsky believes the role of treasurer can be expanded, according to a recent post he made on Patch.

After serving two terms as mayor of Highland Park and two before that as a City Council member, Belsky decided not to seek another term in 2011 to devote time to teaching and pursuits in the private financial sector.

Belsky was a member of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board from 2008 to 2011. The group sets financial reporting standards for state and local governments across the country. He said he is currently a registered financial advisor with Greenwich Investment Management.

In addition to his position with Greenwich, Belsky is an adjunct professor of public finance at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy and has spent 30 years in the investment services industry, according to the text.

Lake County Board member David Stolman will run for Lake County treasurer in 2014, he announced last week.

“It has been my honor to serve my neighbors in Lake County, and I wish to continue to do everything I can to ensure our county remains an oasis of fiscal sanity in Illinois,” said Stolman, a Buffalo Grove resident who has served on the county board since 1992, and as its chairman from 2010-2012.

“As Lake County treasurer, I pledge to carry on the legacy of Bob Skidmore by advancing technology in the office while being efficient with taxpayer dollars,” he said.

In a press release issued last week, Stolman described himself a leader in Lake County for economic development. He helped create Lake County Partners, a non-profit which works hand-in-hand with Lake County Government to create and retain quality jobs, stimulate capital investment, pursue economic diversity, and improve the county's business climate. He has also led the charge for the extension of Route 53, and while on the county board he has worked to continue the Lake County tradition of fiscal responsibility, he said.

“My primary motivation will be to do the job well for the people who employ us, the taxpayers of Lake County,” he said. “In addition, I believe the treasurer has a unique opportunity to positively impact the county economy which would improve the lives of Lake County families. I intend to do so by being a strong voice for economic development and an ambassador for our wonderful county.”
