The Greening of Local Economy Has a Hub

Green businesses can get listed on regional website.

The Green Economy Center of Lake County & Northeastern Illinois website launched in May, coinciding with the County Green conference at the College of Lake County.

“The main idea for the website is for it to become a hub of information for building a green economy,” said Stephen Bell, director of the Green Economy Center.

"A lot of people talk about the green economy and they talk about wind and solar energy. Growing a green economy takes all those people between wind energy and solar panels,” Bell said.

The Green Economy Center is a joint effort of the College of Lake County, the Illinois Green Economy Network and other partners. The Illinois Green Economy Network is a partnership of Illinois’ 48 community colleges working to grow a green economy through training, workforce development and community outreach.

The website will act as a hub of local green activity. Consumers will be able to find area environmentally friendly companies, restaurants and services. Since the website just launched, there are not many listings yet.

Businesses that want to get listed can do so for no charge for the first year if the company gets listed before Sept. 1, 2011. Businesses also can get information about how to go green on the website.

Bell said the Green Economy Center isn’t in the business of certifying green companies, however, there will be filters in place to ensure the credibility of the green businesses.

The website also lists green events and activities, green jobs, and includes news and videos on sustainability, green building, and environmental topics.
